Durban isn’t just about beaches and braais — it’s also packed with fun, affordable family activities that your kids will love (and your wallet will thank you for). Here are a few of my recent adventures with my little ones that I can highly recommend.

1. Durban Natural Science Museum

Cost: Free (yes, mahala!)

Not many things in life are free, but the Durban Natural Science Museum is one of them – and it’s a must-visit! Parking nearby isn’t always the easiest, so I recommend doing what we did: park a little further away and grab an Uber. Totally worth it.

The museum is incredibly well maintained and perfect for younger kids. There are animal sound displays, actual sculptures of animals, and even fossils and skeletal remains. The highlight? A life-size, full-scale Tyrannosaurus rex that had my kids wide-eyed with excitement. Both educational and entertaining, this outing is a win for families.

2. Port Natal Maritime Museum

Cost: R10 per person

Located right next to the BAT Centre and close to Wilson’s Wharf, this museum is a hidden gem that’s both affordable and fascinating. Entry is only R10, and it offers some of the best views of the port while you’re there. The museum features an impressive collection of maritime-themed exhibits showcasing Durban Harbour and its ships. Kids (and adults!) will love exploring the two real ships on site.

There are both indoor and outdoor displays, which makes it a fun mix of discovery and play. They’re open Monday to Saturday from 08:30–16:00, and Sundays/Public Holidays from 11:00–16:00. With such a low entry fee, this is definitely one of Durban’s must-visit family outings.

3. Bunny Zone (Malvern)

Cost: Free entrance (extras at small fees)

This one was an absolute hit with my 1-year-old and 5-year-old! At Bunny Zone, kids get to interact with and feed bunnies and guinea pigs (food available for purchase), but that’s just the start. They’ve recently added a mini golf course (so much fun and very affordable), a train ride for the little ones, and even donkeys to feed. There are two fantastic playgrounds packed with swings, slides, and merry-go-rounds. For older kids (and fun dads!), there’s paintball and even a virtual reality room.

If you’re planning a kids’ party, this venue is amazing and affordable. I attended a party here recently and the snack platters were top-notch. Plus, their onsite coffee shop, Bean Hunters, serves meals, cakes, and milkshakes that are seriously drool-worthy.

4. Mini Town

Cost: R40 adults | R30 kids

This one is pure nostalgia for me – I visited as a child, and it’s still going strong today (since 1969!). There were rumours about it closing down, but thankfully, it’s still open seven days a week. It’s not the longest activity, but worth every minute to relive childhood memories and share them with your little ones. They also host kids’ parties, which is such a cute touch.

5. Daisies and Dreams Nursery (Bluff)

Cost: Affordable (mini golf & play area)

This quaint nursery is such a gem. While moms shop for flowers, plants, and garden ornaments, the kids can enjoy a small but lovely play area that’s perfect for toddlers and young children. They also offer a mini golf course (again, affordable and designed with little ones in mind). The coffee shop here deserves its own shoutout – they serve the best toasted sandwiches, decadent cakes, and I had a virgin strawberry daiquiri that was so delicious I didn’t even miss the alcohol. Win-win: kids burn energy, mom leaves with a plant and a full tummy.

Bonus Splurge: Umgeni Steam Railway

Cost: R230 adults|R180 kids/pensioners|Kids under 2 free

Okay, this one isn’t exactly budget-friendly — but it’s worth every cent. The Umgeni Steam Railway is such a magical experience. The kids were thrilled, and honestly, so was I. Snacks and refreshments are sold on board, but you can also bring your own. Before and after the ride, there’s a craft market filled with unique goodies and food stalls. The whole experience feels like stepping back in time while making brand-new memories.

Final Thoughts

Durban truly has something for everyone — from free museum visits and bunny cuddles to nostalgic throwbacks and scenic train rides. These outings prove that family fun doesn’t have to break the bank, and sometimes the simple, affordable experiences are the ones that create the biggest smiles.
